OI Corporation
O.I. Corporation ("OIC") was organized in 1963 under the Business Corporation Act of the State of Oklahoma under the name Clinical Development Corporation (CDC), a building contractor for medical and research enterprises. Within a few years, CDC was unable to meet its financial obligations, placed on the market as a "public shell corporation", and purchased by investors for a new business. In 1969 CDC changed its name to Oceanography International Corporation ("OIC") and moved its headquarters into a 6,250 sq. ft. facility on 2.49 acres of land in College Station, where it changed its focus to oceanography equipment. This business led to OIC's production of water-quality measurement instrumentation, as oceanography equipment sales declined. In 1969 O.I. Corporation developed the Company's first TOC analyzer. In 1981, the Company moved into a 28,750 square foot facility and added another 40,000 square feet in 1998.
General Analysis Corporation
General Analysis Corporation (GAC), founded by Paul Wilks, was incorporated on June 26, 1979 in the State of Connecticut as a franchise analyzing service company aimed at providing analytical services for environmental analysis in air monitoring (initially workspace toxic vapor monitoring for OSHA compliance testing). In 1981 Paul Wilks started investigating the analysis for beverage carbonates and Brix. In 1983 GAC introduced the LAN analyzer to monitor carbonates and Brix in beverage and in 1992 the SAM was introduced in the market to analyze gas for refrigerant monitors. In 1993 the SAM was completely redesigned. Paul Wilks was founder and former president of Wilks Scientific Corporation, maker of infrared analystical instruments, including toxic vapor analyzers, now a part of the Foxboro Company. In 1979, Paul Wilks founded General Analysis Corporation and Dr. Donald S. Lavery, formally laboratory director at Wilks Scientific, joined GAC as Vice-President and Technical Director. O.I. Corporation purchased certain assets and assumed certain liabilities of GAC on February 1, 1999, and the transaction was recorded using the purchase method of accounting.
ALPKEM Corporation
ALPKEM Corporation was founded in 1969 and designed, manufactured, and marketed segmented flow analyzers, flow injection analyzers, and field-portable instruments. ALPKEM's principal customers were industrial businesses, semiconductor manufacturers, engineering and consulting firms, municipalities, and environmental testing laboratories. ALPKEM originated from A&L Chemical, a distributor of chemical solutions for blood analyzers founded by George Lizer and Mike Armstrong. Raymond Pavitt was, at that time, a regional service engineer for Technicon, a manufacturer of blood analyzers, whose customers were having trouble getting chemicals for the blood analyzers. Mr. Pavitt discovered the small A&L Chemical Company, and as he became acquainted with George Lizer and Mike Armstrong, they decided to go into business together. The resulting company was founded in 1969 and named ALPKEM, which stands for Armstrong, Lizer, Pavitt Chemical Company. Later, Pavitt and Lizer bought Armstrong out and began remanufacturing Technicon blood analyzers. Jeff Cawley and Lynne Massie began selling these analyzers to the industrial market in the late 1970s. In 1984 ALPKEM introduced their own analyzer, the RFA. On August 31, 1988 the company was acquired by Perstorp Analytical. In 1992 ALPKEM introduced the Flow Solution Analyzer. O.I. Corporation purchased certain assets of ALPKEM on May 1, 1996, and the transaction was recorded using the purchase method of accounting.
